Why do our bodies wear out as we grow old? Meet Charles Mobbs, a scientist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. By trying to answer this mysterious question, he and his team have found what could be a way to do something long thought impossible: reverse kidney damage caused by diabetes.

  1. I have been on this diet for 3 weeks and 4 days and have lost 23 lbs. More than that though, all my joint pain that I would have the moment I woke up until I went to sleep … is gone! I have more energy than I have had for decades. I eat the standard Ketogenic diet: 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs. My cholesterol level is 119. Guess you guys have not heard of Harvard University's confession about the fat and cholesterol studies they did in the 50s. The ADMITTED that they were paid by the sugar industry (at the time the most powerful lobby around besides the steel industry) to have their tests show that saturated fat and cholesterol was the culprit, not sugar which was the truth. Time magazine has done 5 cover stories on this. SUGAR is your enemy not fat.

  2. A quick chemistry lesson
Your digestive tract is full of bacteria. Some of them feed on choline and carnitine, nutrients in red meat, egg yolks and high-fat dairy products. As they feed, they give off a chemical called TMA (trimethylamine). Your liver turns TMA into TMAO (trimethylamine-N-oxide).
TMAO in your blood affects the inner wall of your blood vessels, causing cholesterol buildup. If you have chronically high TMAO, you have double the risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Studies show that levels of TMAO in your blood can help predict your risk of heart disease.

    A natural treatment

So, if TMAO is harmful, how do we get rid of it? One way is to stop gut bacteria from making TMA in the first place.
The new study by Dr. Hazen and his team found that a natural substance called DMB (3,3-dimethyl-1-butanol) could do this in mice. The result was lower TMAO levels and fewer clogged arteries.
“We were able to show that drugging the microbiome is an effective way to block diet-induced heart disease,” says Dr. Hazen. “It’s much like how we use statins to stop cholesterol from forming in a body’s cells.”
DMB is found in some olive and grapeseed oils. Because it’s not an antibiotic, DMB doesn’t kill “good bacteria.” And, unlike antibiotics, there’s little risk of overusing it or building resistance to it.

    What this means for you

There’s a long way to go before treatments are fully tested and approved for humans.
“My hope is that, down the road, this type of approach to lowering TMAO can be used to augment other approaches for reducing risk of cardiovascular events,” says Dr. Hazen.
In the meantime, should you stop eating meat and other animal products? Dr. Hazen says moderation is key.
“Omnivores usually do have higher levels of TMAO than vegetarians and vegans, but not always,” he says. “TMAO level is determined more by your gut microbes than your diet. Other factors also play a role, such as the microbes you’re exposed to and other aspects of your health, like kidney function and genetics.”

A test to measure TMAO levels is now available at Cleveland HeartLab.

Red Meat Linked to Kidney Failure -Red meat increases your risk for kidney failure, according to a study published online in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Researchers assessed data from 63,257 participants as part of the Singapore Chinese Health Study and tracked diet and kidney failure. Those who consumed the most protein from red meat increased their risk for end-stage kidney disease. Results showed that replacing a single serving of red meat with another source of protein, such as soy products or legumes, cut the risk for disease by over 60 percent. These findings support previous research that suggests diets high in processed meats increase risk for disease and mortality.

  3. This video makes it so clear why science is so bad, the pharmaceutical companies own the University labs.
I choose to believe that Charles Mobbs put this video out because he is not allowed to do human diet research, and he knows how important this information is to disseminate.

  4. I gave you a THUMBS DOWN! Do you think you are helping, by wanting to investigate this possible life saving reversal of kidney disease in diabetics by waiting to develop A FRIGGIN D R U G TO DO IT?????? THE MICE WERE ON A KETOGENIC DIET- NOT DRUGS!!! My next thought is, oh, YOU MUST BE IN LEAGUE WITH THE BIG PHARMA, WHAT DRUG COMPANY(IES) ARE FUNDING YOUR RESEARCH???? I am wondering if you are playing a very dirty game.
Your research was uplifting and so hopeful, UNTIL you stated it was only for trying to make a DRUG to MIMIC THE EFFECT OF THE KETO DIET- hogwash.

  5. This is a sound and thoughtful vid. It is well known that a low-carb high-fat diet is therapeutic for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and the many-headed hydra of disease that is insulin resistance. The LCHF diet is now proven by medical science to be the proper natural human diet. Don't expect you to believe me, but check out the You Tube vids of Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Stephen Phinney, and others. Personally, the benefits of the LCHF diet have been so dramatic in my life that I will never go off it.

  6. The comment at 5:46 is insane and shows how far removed from the natural order of things we have become as the result of Big Pharma and Big Agriculture. Think about it, we can correct kidney damage through diet but now we're going to create a synthetic drug that mimics this process and has so many side effects it will probably end up killing you.

  7. I try to reintroduce carbs after 3 years without them but I keep getting serious depression, anxiety and insomnia everytime I try to get on them. Why on earth do I have problem digesting carbs now?? I'm desperate for a solution. Thanks!

  8. A sedentary individual eating abundant carbs can increase risk of diabetes. BUT, being physically-active, we increase insulin sensitivity of our muscles. Sedentary muscles create insulin resistance. ALSO, FIBER-RICH carbs are better than processed carbs. So if we put the people on a LOW-GI diet with HIGH-FIBER & HIGH-PROTEIN CARBS, this would be IDEAL. A ketogenic diet can also be hazardous on many levels- http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4325592/

  9. Typical drug company scientists, take something free and make money. Who cares if they kill people doing it with side effects. The Ketogenic diet is awesome, especially for athletes.

  10. Soda and Starbucks have too much sugar and fat in their drinks……………
Food should not be bad for you…… processed food has too much fat, salt, sugar and additives in them making them unhealthy. People need to go to their favorite food processors website, click on the CONTACT link and send them an email asking them to reduce the amount of fat, salt, SUGAR and ADDITIVES in the foods they produce. Their common answer is that they are producing what the customers want. You have to let them know that consumers want healthier food choices with less salt, fat, SUGAR and ADDITIVES in them. It only takes a minute to send them an email, tweet, call or text. Food should not be bad for you. There is an obesity epidemic leading to increases in heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.
Do something — make a difference

  11. Riding a bike is fun and good exercise………walking, bicycles and mass transit will all be part of making cities livable.
    Ride to school………ride to work………ride for fun………..
Bike to work day should be everyday….. employers needs to provide places to park and lock bicycles and encourage employees to ride a bicycle to work. Children should be riding a bike to school instead of being dropped off by their parents. Cities need to do more to provide safe walking and biking trails and paths that connect homes, schools and businesses. Speak up and ask for more bicycle paths in your community. Obesity is a growing problem around the world leading to an increase in heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure. Walking and biking can help improve health.

  12. Fucking retarded. It's good to have saturated fats in your diet, but to think you should just pound it in to yourself is stupid. Ask any fucking doctor. Demonizing glucose altogether disregarding fruit and whole grains is more retardation. Fucking go away with this idiotic bullshit. The same goes for those thinking ZERO saturated fats is optimal. Yeah, optimal for me to feel like a weak batshit crazy b12 deficient Vegan.

  13. I was good with what they were doing until they said they didn't want the people to go on this diet, That they just wanted to mimic the effects with a drug. They can keep their drugs! :(
