Associate professor of medicine, the director of the Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, and medical director of the Duke Center for Smoking Cessation. Dr. Westman is also board certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, and has a masters degree in clinical research. His clinical research and clinical care relate to lifestyle treatments for obesity, diabetes, and tobacco dependence, and has over 90 peer-reviewed publications. He is currently the president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, and a fellow of the Obesity Society and the Society of General Internal Medicine. Finally, he is co-editor of the medical textbook, Obesity: Evaluation and Treatment Essentials, and co-author of The New Atkins for a New You, and Cholesterol Clarity.

  1. In his books, Kevin Galalae thoroughly exposes the reason why noncommunicable diseases have so dramatically increased in recent decades. Neither dietary changes nor medicine can address the fundamental problem. This is by design.´╗┐

  2. Humans to be healthy need tons of plant foods. Animal foods aint no good for us (cancer wise), and for the earth. Almonds, meat and fish exploitation as it is done today ruin the earth and are terribly wastefull. We feed cows sooo much grains.´╗┐

  4. I think that low carb gurus don't show all the data. Go see Michael Greger at and you will find something quite different and everything he says is based on studies. I have watched so many information on the web about health and I have not found one study that proves that meat is good for you. Every study on meat shows that it has bad effects on people.´╗┐

I heard from many people that it will be hard to get enough fats in my diet on keto.┬á I ate a stick of melted butter with lemon over broccoli.┬á I then looked up the calories in a stick of butter as well as carbs in all that broccoli and lemon.┬á I don't know how people can eat the amount of fat I could easily eat with the calories from meat and veggies and loose weight.┬á Many people say the fat can't hurt you, that you don't have to count it.┬á I don't know how this can be true.┬á I think it would be easy for me to over or under eat fat.´╗┐

Previous comments have pointed out the doctor is not fashionably slim┬á I myself was 49 years old┬á 224 lbs and 5'3" but after three months on the diet I am 198 lbs┬á5'3"┬á I also look short and "puffy" but not nearly┬áas "puffy" as┬áI did three months ago,┬áand my hair grew longer and my menopausal acne went away┬á Everybody ages, and the diet does result in weight loss┬á I guess someone will say my input is not good because┬ádiet advice given to middle aged overweight women is best taken from a beauty contestant´╗┐

  11. Been on keto for about a year and a half. It's the greatest. Got down to zero extraneous fat, and then had to reintroduce a carb day every week because I lift weights. It's actually hard to put any fat on now. Feel better than ever though. Always recommend keto to others.´╗┐

  12. Hi smash the fat, when we eat too many carbohydrates and sugar we may ┬ábecome insulin resistant, and then we wear out the pancreas developing diabetes. Okay that is understood, then, what will happen to our gallbladder for eating too much fat? "The Ketosis diet ." A few years down the line we will ┬áhave a problem with the gallbladder or other organ in the body. This is the latency period. Too much FAT in the diet might become harmful to the body later on in life. A balanced healthy diet minimizing stress in conjunction with exercise to sweat it out toxins and calories with do the body good. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.´╗┐

  13. Thank you for this. I think a lot more people need to hear this from doctors. I tested it myself and lost 14lbs in 15 days, but then I ate some carbs and "fell off". But I know this works.´╗┐

  14. Your blood maintains about 1 tablespoon of sugar children 1 teaspoon. Drink a coke with 14 tablespoons _ doesn't make any sense but a high percentage of people do just that. Then when someone says something like fast and eat higher fat they go nuts on em dismissing the idea as quakery. ???????´╗┐
